National Senior Citizens DayNational Senior Citizens Day is a time to pause, celebrate, and reflect on the invaluable contributions of the older adults in our communities. Seniors are historians, mentors, advocates, and neighbors whose life experiences shape the fabric of our neighborhoods. Yet, behind the scenes, many older adults—especially those residing in long-term care facilities—face significant isolation, systemic barriers, and challenges to their basic rights and safety.

At Empowered Aging, National Senior Citizens Day is more than an annual observance; it is a call to action. True appreciation requires standing alongside older adults to ensure they age with dignity, respect, and full agency over their lives.

Turn Celebration into Action: How You Can Get Involved

Honoring seniors means showing up for them. Whether you have a few hours a month or want to make a long-term commitment, your time can fundamentally transform a resident’s daily life.

  • Become a Certified Long-Term Care Ombudsman: As an Ombudsman volunteer, you serve as an advocate for residents in long-term care facilities across Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties. You will help resolve care complaints, prevent elder abuse, and safeguard resident rights. Learn more on the Empowered Aging Volunteer Opportunities page.
  • Connect Through the Resident Enrichment Program: Through our Resident Engagement Project (REP) initiative, volunteers spend meaningful time directly with seniors. Whether sharing stories, engaging in recreational activities, or providing friendly companionship, your presence helps combat social isolation and brings joy to residents.
  • Community Outreach & Education: Help raise awareness about elder justice, resident rights, and care resources by representing our mission at local community events and workshops.
